A prostate biopsy is the removal of a small quantity of tissue through a needle placed into the prostate. The prostate is imaged using the ultrasound as a guide in conducting the biopsy
Why do you need a Prostate Biopsy?
Prostate disease can be assessed by a combination of methods:
- Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) by your doctor
- PSA levels – a blood test
- Ultrasound and biopsy
Points 1 and 2 may suggest significant disease. Biopsy is then carried out as the most sensitive method to look for cancer or inflammatory disease.
